Choosing the Best Large Format Tile Size for Your Open Floor Plan
Short answer
For most open-concept Texas homes, 24×48 porcelain is the sweet spot: it reads as large format, fits hallways efficiently and is easier to keep flat. 48×48 suits big great rooms with few cuts; 32×64 and 48×96 work for statement spaces. Match the tile to the narrowest room it runs through and keep joints at 1/16″–1/8″.
Common sizes and where they shine
| Size | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| 24×48 | Whole-home floors, hallways, kitchens | Plank offsets limited to 33% |
| 32×64 | Great rooms, commercial lobbies | More waste in small rooms |
| 48×48 | Large open areas, minimal cuts | Needs very flat substrate |
| 48×96+ slabs | Walls, showers, islands, statement floors | Requires slab handling tools |
Three rules of thumb
- Design for the narrowest space. If one tile size runs from a 4-ft hallway into a 24-ft great room, choose a size that doesn’t leave slivers in the hall.
- Plan the layout before you buy. We dry-lay and draw layouts to center tiles on doorways, islands and fireplaces.
- Thinner joints need flatter floors. 1/16″ joints look stunning but require rectified tile and tight prep.
Matte, honed or polished?
Matte and honed finishes hide dust and are more slip-resistant — ideal for kitchens and family rooms. Polished finishes add drama to entries and formal living spaces but show footprints and need rugs at exterior doors.
